The Round of 16 opened carefully. Cautiously, even. But sometimes the most important thing about the opening act is the result — and FC Ipaye got exactly what they needed.

Waheed Jimoh’s goal was the difference. The only goal of a closely contested tactical encounter that showed exactly how much is at stake at this stage of the competition. Both sides knew that a defeat here — in the first leg — could mean everything. And so both sides played accordingly: disciplined, organised, and unwilling to gamble.

FC Ogunlade were not short of quality. They pressed well, created moments in the first half, and made FC Ipaye work hard for every inch of space on the pitch. But Jimoh’s goal — taken with the composure you would expect from a player in this form — proved to be the decisive moment, and FC Ipaye held on to claim the narrow advantage heading into the second leg.

Wasiu Ipaye’s community side will know this tie is far from over. Ogunlade will come at them hard in the return fixture, knowing a goal early can change everything. The left-footed wizard will need to have his team ready.
